Taking a necessary break

As I sit here watching the Tour De France- in September- the last thing I really want to do is nothing. Seeing these boys fly up and down mountains makes every fiber in me want to go and find the hilliest terrain- if which there isn’t much down here but still- and rip the legs on some hills. Yet, here I sit with my legs up, butt putting a dent in the couch and feeling lazy.
A simple procedure required a little rest and whether a forced break or a planned one, the body and mind needs that time away from training. Often your body will let you know that it needs a break, some time off or at least time away from tour focused training, in an effort to rest and recover. Being attentive to your body and what it needs is imperative and is where a coach can help identify and import that into training
in a year without racing, it can be tougher to determine when that rest is needed. With a racing season - your “rest time” would typically follow the last race for a natural break but when there a no races, it is important to listen to your body.
in a year absent of races, it has been a nice pressure free time to really enjoy the bike and training without thought of competing on weekends and for many, can be a great time to really hone in on some things that need to be strengthened. BUT your body will still need that break at some point and listen to it, take it and know you will be better for it down the road
Hard to get excited to get on the bike or out on the trails? Those shoes seem to not want to go on your feet for the run? Pumping up the tires for the ride takes way more effort the normal? A ride or run feels like you are just getting thru it rather then getting after it? Perhaps the weight room looks far to intimidating and just can’t seem to be bothered to throw some plates around? All of these things are a simple sign that your body and mind need a little break, and rather dig a hole for yourself, plan to take some time off / away to regroup, recover and get ready to start up with another good training block
Another week or so, and the body / mind should be able to get started back up but u til then, will enjoy the TDF in September
cheers
